The Northeast is a region of virgin rainforest, stunning rivers, floating islands, waterfalls wonders, wetlands and red soil. Rich in wildlife and vegetation, habitat of pumas, alligators and a variety of birds this is the region where "mate" is produced, favourite drink amongst Argentinians. The north of the region was once governed by Jesuit missionaries whose missions implemented advanced concepts of egalitarian society. These still remain in the form of the magnificent and well preserved missions of San Ignacio and Santa Ana. In Misiones, Indigenous cultures mix with decendents of Eastern European immigrants and with the modern day flux of neighbouring countries (Brazil and Paraguay). Ideal for birdwatching, nature lovers and cultural interest. It is best to visit this region in winter, autumn and spring. And enjoy its very laid-back atmosphere!
